Abstract

The torpedo piles represent the main foundation type applied offshore consisting in an international patent developed by Petrobras. However, it is necessary to have a better knowledge of its behavior in physical models through bearing tests in state of the art instrumentation.
The main objective of the work presented herein is the study of the uplift behavior of instrumented torpedo piles in a soft clayey deposit with known geotechnical properties.
The research includes the conception of the applied instrumentation, the instruments calibration in the laboratory, the site tests and model instrumentation, the data acquisition and the experiments interpretation.
The predicted behavior is compared to the experimental performance through the various phases:installation of torpedo model; period just after installation, during reconsolidation due to dissipation of the pore-pressure built up after installation and load-displacement response to pile vertical uplift in clay. Loading and unloading cycles have also been performed in order to investigate the effect of resistance degradation on the uplift capacity.
The results have also been compared to a series of test programs carried out on well documented piles instrumented in clay over the past 30 years.
