Abstract

The objective of this work is to study the behavior of Brazilian vegetation throughout time series of vegetation index of the AVHRR sensor, observing the variations of the types of vegetation, influences and relationships with the climate. The NDVI and FAPAR datasets have spatial resolution of 0.1ºx0.1º and temporal resolution of 10 days for the period 1982 to 1999. The data were investigated considering the seasonal and interannual variations for fitoecology regions of the country. The FAPAR results are also analyzed against two rainfall time series. The largest amplitude of variation of NDVI occur in Savanna and Savanna-Steppe, vegetation types with less variation in FAPAR values, due to adaptation to environmental changes. The largest values of NDVI and FAPAR were observed in Evergreen Broadleaf Forests (Dense and Open) and Campinarana. Analyses of FAPAR show that ecosystems with all strata and structured soil have higher values. Even though, the preliminary results show that exists evidences of relation between the behavior of the FAPAR and agricultural production. The relationship between FAPAR and rainfall varies in intensity and effect according to region. The ENSO events have influence on interannual variations of NDVI and FAPAR, mainly in the North and Northeast. Furthermore, the discussion presents that the NDVI, in general, reflects the behavior of vegetation interconnected to the climate, while the variations in FAPAR are more associated to the weather.
