Abstract

This work introduces the Lagrangian Sample Mean (LSM) method for the treatment of the Navier-Stokes equations in order to solve boundary layer flow problems numerically. The method is based on the hypothesis that the small scale motions are responsible for the homogenization of the physical properties in infinitesimal fluid parcels, by means of a mixing process. Such a process is mathematically expressed as a linear averaging operator. When the LSM is applied to the Navier-Stokes equations for an incompressible fluid in the lagrangian frame of reference the functional form of the resulting equations is the same of the original ones, and the number of unknowns remains the same of the available equations. Therefore, the number of degrees of freedom of the problem is reduced without the occurrence of the closure problem. The resulting system of equations is solved numerically by using the semi-lagrangian method. In order to validate the LSM method, two-dimensional simulations of the following flows were made: along a flat plate at low Reynolds numbers; in a turbulent wake; in a turbulent jet; in a mixing layer; and in a channel at Rer= 237, Rer= 409 and Rer= 517. The simulations were compared to analytical and experimental results and it was verified that the main features of the flows were properly replicated. The LSM method was able to simulate the transition to turbulence; the occurrence of inverse energy cascade; and flow in the presence of an adverse pressure gradient. All simulations were numerically stable and had a low computational cost. Also, the implementation of the method was very simple. The good results of the study suggest that the LSM method can be competitive with other methods presently applied to obtain numerical solutions of boundary layer problems.
