Abstract

The effects of rainfall in the landslides in the city of Rio de Janeiro were analyzed. Rainfall events are the predominant cause of landslides; however, it has been observed that they may not be the only triggering factor. It was observed that in the corresponding period of the present study, the proportion of occurrences increased in regions of occupation of low income communities compare to the other areas of the city. In general, it was also verified a higher number of occurrences in areas where human intervention occurred. The combined effect of hourly rainfall intensity and accumulated rainfall were verified and a differentiated behavior for the sub-regions of the city was observed. Analyses were carried out considering the product of the hourly rainfall intensity and accumulated rainfall, IAn, and it was verified its correlation with the number of occurrences of landslides per km2 of area susceptible to landslide. Moreover, the results also shown that some regions of the city present a significant greater or less susceptibility to landslide due to rainfall compare to the observed behavior of the other areas.
