Abstract

The alterability study of rock materials represents an important research to geotechnical works. Through this study it is possible to define the material life time and adjust the use of these materials due to their intrinsic characteristics and the conditions of the exogenous environment. The main objective of this research is to evaluate the geomechanical behavior and the alterability of the gneiss from the Simplício hydroelectric power dam in order to predict the material behavior during the time life of the dam. For this research, an accelerated percolation equipment was developed. The test simulates the effect of water flow through the canals of interconnection and adduction of the dam. Samples were obtained in intact level and 06 degradation’s levels (600h, 1200h, 2400h, 4800h, 6000h and 8300h). Accelerated percolation tests intended to represent the loading conditions of the material in the field. To evaluate the alteration of the material physical and mechanical properties, a qualitative evaluation of the rock joint surfaces, a petrographic characterization, absorption tests, uniaxial and diametral compressive strength tests were performed. The obtained results were correlated with the previous results from MAIA & SALLES (2006) in order to predict the long term behavior of the material. The Simplício Gneiss presented a 55.7% uniaxial compressive strength loss considering a 50 years operation time for the dam.
