Abstract

The objective of the present research is the investigation of the structural performance of pultruded members manufactured with glass fiber reinforced resin. The research included an experimental program with concentric compression and flexural tests at room and high temperatures, in order to identify the temperature effect in the structural behavior of the pultruded members. Material creep was also identified during structural tests due to high temperature effect, resulting in reduction of the strength capacity. The composite material was characterized, including its fiber volume fraction, tensile strength and modulus of elasticity. The theoretical structural performance of pultruded members was also evaluated with the help of elastic stability theory, by combining computational buckling analysis and experimental observation of collapse mechanism. The comparison between experimental and theoretical results allowed defining procedures to compute structural strength, with special emphasis in the local plate buckling mode. In this case it was verified that the traditional effective width method is not appropriate to be applied in the case of pultruded members. Finally, the contribution of temperature in the structural performance of composite glass fiber reinforced pultruded members was included in the evaluation of its ultimate limit state.
