Abstract

The high number of landslides observed in forested slopes in Nova Friburgo-RJ during the extreme rain event occurred in 2011, creates the need for more specific studies about the influence of forests on slope stability. This research aims at appraising the increase of shear strength of coluvial soils due to forest root system on Nova Friburgo forested slopes, through in situ shear tests called: Preliminary Test and Final Test. The tests allowed the evaluation of the behavior of rooted (Forested Soils) and non-rooted soils (Colluvium) using in situ carved soil blocks. In order to obtain the physical properties, strength parameters, organic matter content and root biomass undisturbed and disturbed samples of both soils were collected for laboratory tests. The increase of strength due to roots was more evident in the preliminary test, where the effects lateral roots was included. The highest strength values were also obtained in this test, where the maximum value was obtained in the forest soil, which may indicate the significant influence of lateral roots in soil reinforcement. In the Final Test, which considered only the effect of the vertical roots on the surface failure, little difference between the maximum resistance obtained in rooted and non-rooted soils was observed. However, there were detected differences between the maximum shear strength found in the two depths analyzed on the forest soil. The upper soil layer (0-0.25 m) showed higher values of maximum and residual strength than the bottom layer (0,25-0,50m), which can be attributed to higher values of root biomass and organic matter contents found in the upper layer and also to the higher moisture content found in the bottom layer.
