Abstract

Ballast is the supporting layer of railroad sleepers used to distribute stresses from the superstructure to acceptable levels of the subgrade. It is well known that the maintenance and rehabilitation of railways due to ballast degradation causes considerable cost. The acceleration of this degradation problem causes an increase in the maintenance frequency and comes from the increase in the amount of material transported in the railways. The understanding of the ballast bearing capacity and the changes that occur with the passage of compositions have induced researchers to use more physical models, on a scale close to the real one, that consider the system of multiple layers. The present research presents the construction of six scenarios with different configurations of a railway pavement, in a physical model at true scale, for the analysis of the mechanical behavior and the tensions and permanent deformations resulting from the applications of the load cycles, through its own instrumentation. Characterization tests of the ballast material were carried out by Brazilian standards, by digital imaging technique and individual particle breaking tests. The objective was to observe the performance of the ballast constructed with aggregates used in stretches of railways in RJ. The analyzed sections presented different behaviors with this ballast material. The material presented a lower than expected result due to the results from the rock genesis and the use of reinforcement of the ballast layer with geosynthetics had good results but does not replace the use of good quality aggregate.
