Abstract

Bored piles have been  the most common foundation solution  in  Western Paraná- Brazil. The predominant soil in the region, a porous clayey soil, has provided adequate
support for this type of foundation. The low cost of implementation combined with speed of  execution are  the  principal  reasons for  the choice of this solution.
However, there are occurrences of  soft  soil layers, generating deep piles and/or with large diameter,  which reflects in the  cost of foundation. The technique of shaft
enlargement  is considered a  recent  technique  in this  country  and is  believed to generate gains in  the  load capacity   of bored piles.  A  gain in load capacity of about 40% has been
observed in  piles with enlargements  in Northeast of Brazil.  The enlargements are obtained after the pile is bored, with a driving point installed in the drilling auger, which
is turned at different depths of the  shaft. The  optimal  distance  between enlargements is one of the object ives  of this research, as well as  the  investigat ion of   the real gain  in
bearing capacity with  this method,  in order to characterize  its  technical and economic feasibility.
