Abstract

In riser structural systems, the region where the riser is connected to the platform is a critical one, due to the development of high stresses. Stress joints and bend stiffeners are structures used in the endings of rigid and flexible risers in order to provide a gradual stiffness transition between the riser and the platform. In the present work it is proposed a methodology for structural analysis and optimization of these two types of connection structures in risers. A simplified analysis procedure of the connection structures is proposed, based on the slender beam theory, beginning with models available in literature and carrying out some extensions of them, whose purpose is to reduce the analysis computational cost. In addition, a procedure of optimization of connection structures is proposed, through a multi-objective optimization algorithm based on Evolution Strategies technique and adapted for the optimum design of such structures. In this way, we obtain a single tool which allows us to handle both stress joints and bend stiffeners. Numerical examples are presented, showing the efficiency and the robustness of the suggested procedures.
