Abstract

The aim this work is evaluating the influence of temperature (from 22° to 100°C) and relative humidity levels (from 0% to 95%) in the direct tensile behavior of PVA fibers and the bond between fiber and matrix for applications in SHCC composites. Additionally it evaluated the effect of temperature on direct tensile creep of the composite and also the influence of the initial condition of the sample (not cracked and cracked up to 0.5%). As a result, with increasing temperature, there was a reduction of: (i) the tensile strength of PVA fibers; (ii) the chemical nominal bond stress; (iii) the frictional stress. On the other hand it was verified an increasing of the strain capacity of the composite. Besides that, the reduction of the internal relative humidity of the PVA fibers have not changed the tensile strength for high temperatures, but decreased at the temperature of 22°C. In the fiber-matrix interface, there was a reduction of the maximum force with an increase of temperature and it increases of maximum force with the decrease of internal relative humidity levels of specimens. For the composites, the reduction of moisture, particularly at high temperatures, corresponded to the reduction of the strain capacity and changes in the crack pattern. Increasing temperatures increased the specific creep of initially intact and cracked s pecimens.
