Abstract

This work presents the resoults obtained from an experimental study in the laboratory and in situ tests over electrical resistivity in soils. Electrical current is generated whenever a difference of electrical potential is apllied, either to conductors either to soils, although the phenomenom envolved in charge transportation is different. In materials which electric charge is easily transported, the conductivity is high, therefore the resistivity is low. The laboratory experiments were caried out using different types of soils, grained and thin. The grained soils tested were different related to grain distribution and shape. All the samples were made using the the “shower” method, in order to obtain diferenta void ratios. The bulk resistivity of the grained soil was measured using the resistivity cone inside the spicemen while solutions with different concentrations flowed thow the soil. The solution from the resevoir were analised quimicaly and the flued conductivity determinated with a conductivimeter. The fine soils were simulated using culinite. The samples were made in an industrial mixing machine. Using the resistivity cone, the bulk value was measured and that of the flued with a conductivimeter. For a specific kind of soil, is was observed, that the conductivity of the flued divided by the bulk conductivity is constant and called formation factor of the soil. This parameter is sensitive to the porosity and grain shapes of the particles, while grain distribution showed litle effect. The reduction of conductivity that happens due to the addition of particles is atributed to the reduction of conduction surface and increase of the eletric current lenth, caused by the tortuosity of the soil In the field tests it was observed that the existence of a mixed material and overconsolidated clay reduce the conductivity due to the reduction porosity. In the layer normaly conslidated clay the bulk conductivity had a smooth increase possibley causad by an increase in the salinity of the water. In the contact with the residual soil the bulk conductivity started to decrease rapidlly until the limit of the test.
